Napbell

Baby monitor app for two phones

To use two phones as a baby monitor, install Napbell on both Android phones. Choose Baby on the phone near the crib and Parent on the phone you carry, then scan the QR code to pair them. They connect directly over your home Wi-Fi, with no account, and you get live video, audio, talk back and an alarm when your baby cries.

Napbell is coming to Google Play. Leave your email and we'll tell you the day it's out.

Set up two phones in four steps

  1. Put a spare phone near the crib. Install Napbell on an old Android phone (Android 8 or newer), open it and choose Baby. Keep it plugged in and point the camera at the crib from a shelf or stand.
  2. Open Napbell on your phone. On the phone you carry, choose Parent and scan the QR code shown on the baby phone. Both phones must be on the same home Wi-Fi.
  3. Pick how it watches. Choose Cry only (camera off), Audio, or Video. You can switch modes later from your own phone.
  4. Go about your evening. Watch or listen whenever you like, hold the button to talk to your baby, and let your phone ring when steady crying starts.

Why pairing with a QR code matters

The QR code on the baby phone holds its address on your Wi-Fi and a secret pairing key. Your phone scans it once and from then on only that phone can connect, over an encrypted link that goes straight between the two phones. Nobody else on the network can watch, and nothing passes through a server. Next time, the parent phone finds the saved baby phone on its own. Read more about using a baby monitor without internet.

Good to know before you start

Both phones need Android 8 or newer; an iPhone version is not available yet. The baby phone works best plugged in for a whole night, especially with video on. If you want the camera off, choose Cry only or Audio and the baby phone only listens. See how the cry alert works, or go back to turning an old phone into a baby monitor camera.

Questions

Do both phones need Napbell?

Yes. Install Napbell on both phones. Choose Baby on the phone near your baby and Parent on the phone you keep with you.

Can two parents watch at the same time?

Each Parent phone pairs with a baby phone by scanning its QR code. Napbell is designed around one baby phone and one parent phone; for two parents, switch who carries the parent phone.

Do the phones need a SIM card?

No. The baby phone only needs Wi-Fi. An old phone with no SIM card works fine.

Which phone should be the baby phone?

Use the older or spare phone as the baby phone, keep it plugged in, and keep your everyday phone as the parent phone so the alarm is always with you.

Does one purchase cover both phones?

Yes. One purchase on either phone unlocks cry alerts and removes ads on both paired phones.

Does it work if the phones are on different Wi-Fi networks?

No. Both phones must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Guest networks and some public networks stop phones from seeing each other, so use your main home network.
